Bollywood Radio On Your Phone

August 13th, 2009

Now you can listen to streaming Bollywood radio on your phone in the USA. Call any of these 3 numbers below and hear a different stream of Bollywood and Hindi music right onto your phone:

(916) 844-3378
(916) 844-3379
(916) 844-3380

These numbers are located in Northern California, USA. They are regular phone numbers, and you are responsible for the cost of calling them. These numbers are not limited to IndiaLD account holders. Anyone who wants can call them and listen to Bollywood music over the telephone.

If you are an IndiaLD account holder, calling these numbers will not deduct from your monthly calling minutes.

This is a bit of an experiment for us. We are curious to see if there is any demand for listening to desi radio, news, and podcasts over the phone. Maybe you have unlimited minutes on your cell plan and a commute where you don’t get any good radio stations to listen to. Maybe your company blocks streaming audio in the office. Maybe you just want to listen to some Indian music and only have your phone with you…

Let us know what you think, and if there is any particular sort of stuff you would want to listen to over the phone. If this takes off then we’ll expand it to include more languages and different shows.

And don’t worry, we are hard at work on our core offerings. Web-based free SMS to India will be out real soon.

Like any radio station, the demand will vary by the type of music being played, the quality of sound and the general station experience (RJ’s, ads, etc)…

Demand will also directly depend on your marketing. Radio is a luxury, so only if people are constantly aware of the existence of the service and constantly reminded of it, will they use it.

Personally, the 3rd number – which played latest music, was more to my taste. I just lost my iPod, so I would love this service. I commute a lot and there aren’t really high quality Hindi radio stations in LA… You would think that I’d be the ideal customer…

I am, but chances are – when I’m in the car, I’m not going to think of this… I’m going to turn on the regular radio cuz it’s right there in front of me. Even my phone is, but it’ll take time getting used to the change…

A final concern is that, I primarily use the phone to make calls. If I’m listening to music, and I receive a call, switching calls etc is a pain…

Does this have potential – yes, depending on how you market it. A blog post isn’t enough for people to be constantly thinking of your product…

    My 2 cents…

You guys seem to have a smart marketing team and I’m sure you’ll work this out well…

Hey Chris, I tried out two of the three numbers. Unfortunately, none of the songs being played were of my liking. First of all, the volume kept moving up and down till I realised that I need to put my phone on MUTE to get a constant volume of output. Then, when I used the speakerphone to play out the music, the output was good.

Music is extremely personal to people – different folks have different likes and dislikes – and that too changes with the mood in which the person is. I would recommend that you stick to one category of music so that you attract people with that streak of music taste. Trying to attract anyone and everyone would be next to impossible and would require unlimited resources. Personally, music on the phone is not something I would go for even if I had unlimited minutes on my mobile. Sorry!! :-) But I must appreciate the thought that you folks are putting in to go well beyond our expectations. Keep up the good work.

    Great Idea,

I often go on long drives and quickly run out of interesting songs in my iPod. And there are some places where there is very poor radio reception. I cannot wait to try this one out. But I don’t see any other use other than while driving. That’s enough for me though.

As many have suggested. The sound quality is little off. If you can please work on the sound quality.

    @Vamsi
Put your phone on mute and the sound will get better. We experimenting with some gear that can bring the quality up a bit. We are also working on adding some additional channels and should have new dedicated phone numbers coming soon.
