Announcing Top Up Minutes!

You guys asked for it. We listened. Now its here. Top Up Minutes just went live.

You can now buy additional blocks of minutes for your account online and instantantly. Running out of minutes? Don’t worry, just login to your account management area, click on the Top Up link and buy more minutes for your account. You can buy as little as 100 minutes and as many as 1000. The best part is that we are going to charge you the same amount per minute as your current plan.

For example if you are in the India 1000 plan, your cost of minutes is currently 1.99 cents per minute. Buying 100 Top Up minutes will just cost you $1.99. If you are in the India 3000 plan, you will pay 1.39 cents per minute, and 100 minutes will cost you $1.39.

If you use the Top Up tool, you’ll never run out of minutes again. You can keep topping up your account during the month. Just make sure you don’t buy too many minutes, since they do not rollover.

If you happen to go over your minutes before you top up, we’ll let you buy those minutes for the top up rate instead of the overage rate of 3.9 cents/min. That means you can use up your monthly minutes, go into the overage, but then pay Top Up prices for those extra minutes you called.

So the overage rate stays, but as long as you pay for those minutes before your next billing cycle we’ll charge you the same price as a Top Up. If you don’t pay for them then, then we are going to charge you the normal overage rate. No exceptions on that either, as it will be too difficult to adjust some billing charges after the fact.

We realize that our rigid block of monthly minutes was creating a need for some of you to upgrade and downgrade your plan all the time. We also realize that some of you ran out of minutes, needed to call India, and couldn’t wait for us to manually add more minutes to your account.

The Top Up tool solves that problem. You guys asked, we listened, and everyone should be happy with the results.

I am writing a spec for an automated upgrade/downgrade tool right now, so look for the ability to upgrade and downgrade your own account in a month or so. We also got some more tricks up our sleeve, but I can’t talk about those yet.

    I’d love the automatic up/downgrade tool. And you said that you have some more tricks up your sleeve, so I dunno if my request now is one of those… But since you seem to be this genie who gives all, I might as well give it a shot…

    The Request: A convenient way to send/receive text messages to/from India (and other countries). How about giving us a local access number we can send texts to for a corresponding number in India. (something similar to the easydial feature). Since you use Voip anyway, I guess it can be easily extended to Doip (Data over IP).

    I am not aware of the technical difficulties, but see if you can give it a shot…

    Ps – Love the option of TopUp minutes =D

    Especially the fact that overage can be covered by standard charges…

    Hey Chris,
    This Option seems to be good one. A person can anytime add minutes to his account if required. IndiaLD rocks!

    Still one query is present. if you call, indiaLD starts charging minutes when ring starts, not when a person picks up the call.
    If the person didnt pickup the call for 2-3 minutes, still you will be charged for those minutes.
    I sent a mail for this issue, but no reply came :(

    thanks,
    Muddu
    Can anything been done for this issue??

    hi,

    As of now you give a local number in Bangalore… How about extending that to other metros?

  7. satkul
    July 2nd, 2009 at 09:59 | #7

    This is exactly what i needed !!! Although you will be loosing revenue because of TopUp mechanism, you have allowed it . That shows you are trying hard to make life easier for your customers rather than try to rip them off as much as possible.

    I can’t believe a telecom service company doing this :-)

    hats off.

    It’s great tool……

    One more request-

    Is it possible to add more local numbers in INDIA, as of now we have just for Bangalore. It would be great to have 1 number for every major states.

  9. July 2nd, 2009 at 11:24 | #9

    @Sasi
    We are looking at a couple different SMS solutions right now. Something will be coming soon.

    @jai
    @smit

    I’ve mentioned this before, but we don’t have plans for another access number in India anytime soon. What does it cost for people to call Bangalore within India?

    @everyone

    Some of the partners had to be convinced that Top Up minutes was a good thing. I think we were limiting our volume by making it hard for people to get more minutes, and that the increased calling will more than make up for our lost revenue from the overage charges. I need you all to prove me right on that. ; )

    Well I use to switch to other calling card, because I did not want to pay 3.9c for overage minutes. I am glad that I wont have to this again. Thanks for this offer. I am sure I will be using it almost every month. A quick question though, will still be able to upgrade or downgrade my plan?

  11. July 2nd, 2009 at 13:57 | #11

    @Harshil
    Yes you can still upgrade and downgrade your account.

    It would be nice if the system tells the number of minutes available when you dial-in to call. Currently we need to go to the website to find it out.

    Thank you so much Chris..!! I think we needed this badly.. I have upgraded/downgraded 3 times in last 3 months.. This solves my problem..

  16. Sasi
    July 4th, 2009 at 02:24 | #16

    Wrt SMS: Like I said, genie in a bottle :p

    Out of curiosity, did your partners need much convincing. I mean, if you were looking at your data sets correctly, it should have been easy to spot a sudden drop in traffic after the monthly limit was exhausted.

    As for call rates to Bangalore from rest of India; If I remember right, the system in India works like this. All calls within the state are considered ‘local’ which means, it’s the cheapest form of calls you can make.

    Any out of state calls would be charged at a premium (STD calls). Though the premium isn’t much higher these days, it’s still comparable to the price you charge. (Around 2/2.5 cents/min).

    So while a call to India from my phone would be 1.3 cents (using MyFavs), a call from India to here would be 3.8 cents a minute – your overage premium. That is the reason, most people are asking for more local access numbers in India. (My family lives in Bangalore though, so I’m happy :p )

    Hi Chris,
    Definitely this is a nice tool. Thanks for making this possible.
    However, this tool is to top up the plan with more minutes but it does not give us the flexibility to downgrade the plan or reduce the minutes. I hope you are aware of this demand from users and are doing something about this as well. This gives customers the confidence of using IndiaLD without any hassels and makes them a real satisfied customer. I am the one who is ga-ga over IndiaLD and recommends all my friends to switch to IndiaLD due to the unmatching flexibility this site offers.
    I am sure you are listening and having some plans to address this demand from your customers.
    A much satisfied customer,

  18. July 4th, 2009 at 11:48 | #18

    @Suman
    As mentioned earlier, we are working on an automatic upgrade/downgrade tool. I almost have the spec done, then it needs to get coded. Probably take a month or so to go live. In the meantime, you can still upgrade/downgrade your account the old fashioned way by filling out the contact form.

    @Sasi
    Thanks for the info on calling costs in India.

    Hello,

    First of all, Wonderful Service by India LD.
    Amazing Low Rates with super high voice quality, Access Numbers in India, Your New Top UP facility tops it all.

    I think asking for anything more just shows how greedy I am :) .
    Do You have plans of having local access numbers in a few more states in US. I think atleast places like Dallas / Houston / Austin in TX should get this.

    I tend to swtich to other calling cards when I make calls from my office where out of state calls require authentication.

    Please let me know.

    Thanking You,
    -PrashanthJ

    Hi,

    Again problem from Montreal :(
    I was trying to purchase some top up time. Then I could not choose my state because no provinces from Canada was listed there. Then it gives an error saying that my zip code is invalid. Please look into this.

    @Shajahan
    @Hansa
    @Shubham

    I just fixed the Top Up code to allow for non US countries. Sorry about that.

    @ely
    We have international access numbers where they are available and there are decent sized Indian ex pat populations. Most of the Gulf states do not have access numbers available because of government regulations. Several of them enforce pretty strict telecom monopolies on their citizens (UAE, Saudi Arabia for example), and do not allow two stage dialing services like ours.

    Thank you for fixing the Top up code for non US countries, I am from Canada, but when I select the country as Canada, I get this message
    “You have entered an invalid zip code”. In Canada it is postal code instead of ‘zip code’ and I entered the correct postal code. could u pls rectify this problem.
    Thanks
    Hansa

    It will be nice if we can hear the minutes remaining when we place the call, instead of checking it on the website.

  38. Kriss
    July 10th, 2009 at 08:08 | #38

    Thank you very much for this feature.

    It will be nice if you can round up to the next 100 minutes and charge for the top over minutes every billing cycle automatically. If one’s top up minutes usage is, say, 146 minutes, charge for 200 minutes for the billing cycle.

  39. July 11th, 2009 at 09:46 | #39

    @Hansa
    Fill out the upgrade/downgrade form on the contact page. There is an option there to tell us when you want to change your plan (either immediately or next billing cycle).

    @REV DAVID WHITENER
    We are looking to add one way text messaging (US to India) sent via our website. Our partner in India already has a solution for that which we need to put in place on our site. Not sure about the timing as there are several other projects keeping us all busy.

    @Mohan
    We’d like to offer that, but we can’t right now. Our monthly plans are setup in a way that makes it impossible for our IVR to tell you the correct number of minutes you have. Annoying.

    @Kriss
    That would be getting too complicated. You’ll have to live with manually topping up or paying the overage for that case.

    @IndiaLD

    Is there any option where i can cancel my top up minutes.

  47. Raj
    July 25th, 2009 at 09:56 | #47

    If I top up 1000 minutes, if I dont consume all of them, will those minutes be carried forward. I think you should provide this option for the top up minutes. Please clarify.

  48. July 27th, 2009 at 16:42 | #48

    @madhav
    Top Up Minutes are non refundable and cannot be canceled.

    @Raj
    Top Up minutes do not rollover. We offer Top Up in increments of 100 minutes from 100 to 1000 minutes so that you can buy the amount closest to what you think you will need for the remainder of the month. You can also Top Up more than once a month.

    So you end up paying for the top up (+ the overage minutes) no matter if you wish to use it or not. I went 240 minutes over my plan and thought would buy 300 minutes so that I can cover the 240 minutes + have 60 additional minutes for the few days left till my new billing cycle. I ended up paying for 540 minutes!
